President of the National Council of Taxi Associations (NCTA), Allan Blair, is expecting a high level of compliance from members to the government's instructions to the public transport sector to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced at Monday's media briefing that in an effort to combat the virus, taxi operators will now be required to carry one less passenger than they are licensed to.

Hackney carriages are licensed to carry three passengers plus the driver, route taxis must carry four passengers and the driver, and seven-seaters should transport six passengers and the driver. Each of these will now have to carry one less passenger.

In an interview with Radio Jamaica News, Mr. Blair commented on the decision, noting that, while the measure will cut into the income of taxi operators, there is no option but to conform since the country is experiencing a health emergency.

Mr. Blair said the association does not recommend that taxi operators withdraw their service despite coronavirus fears. Instead operators have been urged to take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety and that of their passengers.
