NEPA changes plan to store toxic material at Petrojam refinery

There has been a change to plans by the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) to use the Petrojam facility to store sodium cyanide removed from the inactive gold mining site at Pennants in Clarendon.

NEPA says it is reviewing options for the removal and safe storage of the toxic material.

A statement from the agency said it was seeking to ensure that it is appropriately stored.

A number of other options are being evaluated by NEPA with a view to making the most prudent selection.

In the meantime, NEPA said the mining site is still restricted and unauthorized persons are not allowed in the area.

The Ausjam mining facility was thrust back into national focus earlier this month after the authorities issued a health alert that toxic waste was leaking from a large metal container.

There were fears that the material was heading towards a nearby river which residents use for domestic purposes.
