Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie
Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie has announced that, with nearly all market fires caused by illegal electricity connections, going forward, new markets will have provisions for vendors to easily access the utility service legally.
The minister, speaking on Friday at the re-opening of the newly re-built Buff Bay Market in Portland, revealed that 98 per cent of these market fires were caused by illegal electricity connections.
"The local authorities cannot afford any longer to sustain illegal connections in the markets, and that is why this Buff Bay market has all the features where the vendors can apply for the light in a controlled fasion," he said.
The Buff Bay market now has 48 stalls for produce, and five for the selling of meat.
Minister McKenzie said six shops will be added, to be operated as haberdasheries, while provisions are also being made to harvest rain water to be stored in tanks for the cleaning of the market.
He said the Buff Bay market, re-built at a cost of more than $55 million, will serve as a blueprint for other markets to be constructed across the island.
The Buff Bay market was closed for reconstruction in 2023.
