The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) says it is probing a reported fish kill, which was observed along sections of the Palisadoes strip on Monday.
NEPA says a site visit was conducted Monday morning, which revealed that the fish kill was localised and was caused by an external intervention of eutrophication.
Eutrophication refers to when excessive nutrients lead to algal blooms and low oxygen waters that can kill fish and sea grass and reduce essential fish habitats.
NEPA says its ongoing probe will be assisted by the National Fisheries Authority, as well as the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard and the Marine Police.
The environmental agency says as part of its investigation, it will be exploring options, such as the installation of real-time monitors in the area and the use of cameras and enlisting the help of the police, coast guards, businesses, fishermen, community members and others who frequent and use the area.
In the interim, the agencies are advising members of the product refrain from fishing, collecting or consuming fish or other marine life from the affected area until further notice as a necessary precaution to protect a public health.
