Kenyan national murdered in Billy's Bay

Superintendent Coleridge Minto

A Kenyan national, who made Jamaica his second home, was killed during a robbery in Billy's Bay, Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth early Friday morning.

He has been identified as multi-disciplinary artist, Patrick Mazola; also known as Mazola WA Mwashighadi.

Superintendent Coleridge Minto, Commanding Officer for the St Elizabeth Police Division, told Radio Jamaica News that Mr Mazola and his partner were attacked by men about midnight.

The men, armed with guns, entered the house and "demanded cash," from the couple, and "when their demands were not met, the men opened fire on the male. He was shot and injured (and) taken to the Black River field hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead," Superintendent Minto reported.

He said the police "have some leads in this matter," but are also appealing to persons who might have additional information to contact the police.

Superintendent Minto says a curfew was imposed in Billy's Bay and surrounding districts following the murder.

The security measure, which started at 6pm yesterday, will end at 6pm tomorrow.

He says, since the passage of Hurricane Melissa, the St Elizabeth division has seen an increase in Category One crimes, including murders and robberies.

A daily curfew has also been effect in St Elizabeth, Westmoreland and St James since last month in a bid to curtail movement.
