New courthouse to be built in Malvern

Following an assessment of damage to the Malvern Courthouse in St. Elizabeth, the Ministry of Justice is now in the process of securing funds to construct a new building.

Public Relations Manager at the Ministry of Justice, Michael Cohen told RJR News that preliminary estimates reveal that approximately $12 million is needed to construct a new courthouse in Malvern.

Mr. Cohen was responding to questions about the future of the courthouse which was extensively damaged during the passage of Hurricane Dean last month.

During the hurricane, a section of the courthouse wall collapsed, trapping a man who was sheltering in a neighbouring shop.

The extent of the damage raised concerns about future court sittings.

The collapse of the wall has also affected operations at the Malvern Police Station which occupied the lower floor of the two-storey building.

A spokesperson at the Ministry of National Security said no decision has been taken to either relocate or renovate the present structure housing the police station.
