Senator Aubyn Hill
It will cost approximately US$800 million to overhaul the sewage system in downtown Kingston.
Aubyn Hill, Minister Without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, disclosed the figure while contributing to the debate on the Urban Renewal (Tax Relief) (Amendment) Act in the Senate on Friday.
Senator Hill said the estimate was provided by an international firm.
The government is attempting to overhaul the sewage system in downtown Kingston as it undertakes development plans.
"You cannot build tall buildings and other building for ordinary people to live in unless you have good sewage and good water, and we don't have it downtown. Some of it is over a hundred years old. We going change it," Senator Hill declared.
The government has said rehabilitation of the sewer system in downtown Kingston is critical if it is to achieve any major urban renewal.
In 2016, then Minister with responsibility for water Dr. Horace Chang had said rehabilitation of the sewers could cost up to US$400 million.
