A nine-year-old student of Villa Road Primary and Junior High School in Mandeville, Manchester, died tragically in a crash on Tuesday morning.
She has been identified as Amara Moore.
The incident happened about 6:50, as Amara was on her way to school.
Reports indicate that a garbage truck was exiting Bonitto Heights onto Bonitto Crescent when it struck Amara, who was standing at the intersection, she was dragged several feet and died at the scene.
Amara's distraught Father told Radio Jamaica News that he received a call telling him to "come now", but he did not know he would be greeted by such tragic news.
Principal of Villa Road Primary and Junior High School, Brent James, said the news has been difficult to absorb as Amara was known to him personally.
Mr. James said the grade four student was very involved in school activities and respectful.
"We interact every day. She literally fights to come and hug me each day. She is very jovial, very involved in the school, a disciplined child, very neat, and a child that had such great prospect. For her life to just be taken away just like that, it's tragic," he bemoaned.
Mr. James said counselling support has been offered to the family of Amara, as well as to staff and students.
Rhoda Moy Crawford, State Minister in the Ministry of Education and Member of Parliament for Manchester Central, said the tragedy has hit close to home as a past student of Villa Road Primary and Junior High.
Ms. Crawford said a guidance counselling team from the Ministry's Region 5 has been dispatched to the school and further support will be given.
