Guyana to institute new measures to counter smuggling of gold

Guyana's government plans to institute new measures to counter the smuggling of gold.

President Dr Irfaan Ali has directed the leadership of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission to ensure the declaration of all gold mined.

The President has ordered that all registered dredges, with no declaration, will be deregistered, and all foreign miners operating illegally in Guyana will be prosecuted and expelled.

Some Brazilian miners operating in Guyana have been given 24 hours to become compliant with the law or face the consequences.

Successive administrations have been grappling with the persistent problem of smuggling and under-declaration of gold despite regulatory measures having been enacted.
