Steps are being taken to thwart efforts by some Jamaican retailers to hoard supplies of brown sugar in an attempt to drive up prices ahead of the Christmas period.
The matter has been brought to the attention of Jamaica Cane Products Sales Limited. There have been complaints from sections of the island of a reduction in the supply of the commodity in recent days.
However, Karl James, General Manager of Jamaica Cane Products Sales, insisted in an interview with RJR News taht there is no real shortage of brown sugar in the retail trade.
Mr. James disclosed that action is being taken to ensure that consumers have adequate supplies.
"We have converted a lot of our 50 kg bags of sugar into pre-package Jamaica Gold Sugar for the retail trade. There’s no shortage of that; there’s plenty of that, but some people are resisting and they want still to be able to just buy the 50 kg package around the back of the supermarket and put on the shelf. We are saying we give you some, but we want you to put more of the pre-packaged sugar on the market,” said Mr. James.
He added that said some retailers were trying to manipulate the price of brown sugar.
