No wage freeze - Police Federation

The Police Federation has stated that it is not prepared to entertain talks from the government of a wage freeze for the 2012-2014 contract period.

This stance follows an all-island delegates and branch board meeting held on Wednesday in Kingston.

Chairman of the Federation, Sergeant Raymond Wilson, told the RJR News Centre that the members are aware of the economic crisis facing the country, but will not accept a wage freeze unless there are alternative benefits.

“…While the members have expressed that they understand what is going on in the country as well… it can’t be that the workers continue to suffer, so there has to be a coming to the table for those discussions so we can determine how we move from there.”

Sergeant Wilson added that the members agree with the proposals for pension reform, as long as they do not interfere with their benefits.

“We are not opposed to reform…(but) it shouldn’t be that in the process members lose benefits whether in the long run or in short run. So as far as those benefits are maintained as they are, then there is likely to be no issue with what is proposed,”

The Federation is also calling for immediate closure to the issue of the hours of work for rank and file police personnel. Sergeant Wilson contends that the matter has gone on for too long.
