Nurses at May Pen Hospital in Clarendon are locked in a meeting with the management of the facility after staging a protest about security concerns this morning.
The nurses, armed with placards, gathered at the entrance to the hospital to protest the physical assault of one of their colleagues by a mentally ill man on Sunday night.
It's reported that about 10:30 p.m., the man was being escorted onto the hospital's compound by a relative, when he attacked the nurse as she was exiting.
The nurse fell while trying to escape and was hit, including on the head, with a stone.
She has been admitted.
The nurses told Radio Jamaica News that security personnel at the hospital did not assist the nurse while she was being chased.
The police intervened and assisted in restraining the mentally ill man.
He is also now a patient at the hospital.
The Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA) confirmed that there was a protest by members of the nursing group outside May Pen Hospital in Clarendon.
It said the meeting with the nurses is to facilitate discussion on how the hospital's security measures can be tightened.
SRHA said it will be providing the necessary support to the injured nurse.
