NWA now able to clean drain where student lost her life in St. Thomas

The National Works Agency (NWA) says it has now resolved the issue which prevented it from gaining access to premises in Dalvey St. Thomas to clean a drain where a student lost her life last week.

Thirteen year-old Brittanie Cohen and two of her peers were trapped by floodwaters as they made their way home during heavy rains.

The NWA had indicated it was prepared to take legal action to access the gully. However Communications Manager Stephen Shaw says the Agency is now able to proceed with its work.

"The Works Agency has gained access to the area and we are now proceeding with the completion of the cleaning of that drain in Dalvey," he declared.

He says because of improved weather conditions Wednesday, the Agency was able to carryout more work, with the aid of heavy equipment. However, he says there is still a challenge with river shingle as the Plantain Garden River is still in spate.
