The National Works Agency (NWA) is seeking to reassure Jamaicans that hotmix patching of roads under the REACH programme will resume on Friday.
Communications Officer at the NWA, Natalie Bloomfield, says work was stalled due to persistent rainfall across the island over the last few days.
"We had some impact from the rainfall to materials, to the works already done, and so on. So we have now rescheduled these works to resume
December 6, which is this Friday. So persons are going to see the work teams out in earnest, getting these roads done, so that persons can have a better or improved surfaces...going into the Christmas season," she said.
Following a report of another pothole related fatality on the weekend, Ms. Bloomfield said with some of the island's roads in poor condition, motorists are being advised to drive with caution.
"A lot of us are aware that there are roadways that are not in the best condition at this time. And while the NWA and other entities work to get these roads to a drivable condition, we are advising persons to just proceed with caution. Stick to the speed limits or drive according to the surface that you're on, because if you are not able to see or you don't know the condition of the road, it's better to be cautious, rather than to cause harm to yourself or property," she urged.
She was speaking Tuesday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106.
On Saturday, a 72-year-old woman died in the crash on Walkerswood main road, St. Ann after the driver of the vehicle in which she was a passenger reportedly swerved to avoid a pothole and collided head-on with another vehicle.
