NWA starts major drain cleaning exercise in St. Elizabeth

The National Works Agency (NWA) has started a major drain cleaning exercise in St. Elizabeth ahead of the hurricane season.

NWA Acting Parish Manager for St. Elizabeth, Ainsworth Davis told RJR News that work started in some sections of the parish two weeks ago and is to be completed by the end of June.

Mr. Davis said special attention will be paid to areas prone to serious flooding such as Goshen, Pepper, Holland Bamboo Avenue, Santa Cruz, Williamsfield and Leeds.

Work will also be done in Balaclava and along the New Market to Middle Quarters Road.

In the meantime, NWA Community Relations Officer for the Central Region Howard Hendricks said work on the multi-million dollar Treasure Beach/Great Bay Drainage system has restarted.

A 500 meter multimillion dollar drain is being constructed to deal with overflows from ponds in the area.

In 2006 over 40 homes in the area had to be evacuated.

Residents were only able to return after pumps were used to remove the excess water.
