NWA to remove advertising signs along Mandela Highway

With work to expand the Mandela Highway to begin this weekend, the National Works Agency (NWA) is to demolish several advertising signs along the road.

The NWA says the signs, located between Six Miles in St. Andrew and Highway 2000 East/West On Ramp in St. Catherine, will impact the expansion work.

Stephen Shaw, NWA Communication Manager, said advertising companies, the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) and the St. Catherine Parish Council were notified of plans to remove the signs.

Mr. Shaw said nearly 70 advertising signs have been erected in the construction zone. However, signs relating to speeding and the Toll Road will be removed and stored.

Traffic management

Meanwhile, the NWA said a detailed traffic management plan for the Mandela Highway will be implemented over the next 24 months.

The road widening works are to be undertaken by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC). Mr. Shaw said the company is expected to ensure that four lanes be available at all times to vehicular traffic.

The widening of the highway will result in, among other things, the creation of six lanes, a service road to facilitate businesses along the northern side of the carriageway, construction of an overpass bridge and significant drainage improvement works.
