The National Water Commission’s nearly 2,000 employees have given the Ministry of Finance until Tuesday to meet with their trade unions to settle a long-standing wage dispute.
The workers have signalled that if the meeting does not materialize they plan to take strong action to place more pressure on the Ministry.
The decision was made on Thursday during a special meeting involving the workers and trade union officials.
National Workers Union Vice President, Granville Valentine, says the workers believe the Government is deliberately stalling efforts to reach a wage settlement.
“The workers clearly indicate that there is no need for us to go to the Ministry of Labour which cannot help our cause. We agreed that we must meet with the Ministry of Finance that makes all the determination as to what the company does relating to financial matters I can assure you that the workers are serious,” Mr. Valentine said.
Operations at the NWC were disrupted last month after the workers went on strike to press their demand for the payment of retroactive and increased salaries.
They agreed to return to work to facilitate further negotiations at the local level.
