Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has suspended a top health official after 14 newborn babies died in a fire at an Islamabad hospital's maternity unit on Wednesday morning.
The fire reportedly broke out in an air-conditioning unit in PIMS hospital, and was quickly ignited by oxygen connections.
Of the 15 babies who were on the ward at the time, one newborn was rescued.
An investigation into the fire is under way, with a committee ordered to report within 24 hours.
The father of one of the victims has criticised the safety measures in place at the hospital, saying only one door was open for visitors
However, the hospital's executive director, Rana Imran Sikandersaid the door to the maternity ward was not locked, but it was manned.
He said this was to protect babies from being stolen from the ward, something that has happened before at government hospitals.
