Pharmacist on fraud charge to return to court

A Westmoreland-based pharmacist accused of defrauding the Ministry of Health and the National Health Fund (NHF) of more than $27 million is to return to court on Tuesday.

Ainsworth Reynolds, 35, who owns and operates the Darliston Pharmacy, was offered $10 million bail when he appeared before the Corporate Area Criminal Court on February 23.

Mr. Reynolds was arrested last month following a high level investigation by the Health Ministry and the Fraud Squad.

Investigators allege that from March 2006 to December 2009, Mr. Reynolds defrauded millions of dollars from the Ministry of Health and the NHF.

It is alleged that during the period, beneficiaries submitted their NHF cards to Mr. Reynolds who swiped them and filled the prescription.

Mr. Reynolds is accused of using some of the cards to deduct monies for fictitious prescriptions.

He is also accused of writing prescriptions in the names of beneficiaries and claiming that they were from several medical doctors.

The scam was uncovered last December by NHF auditors who became suspicious after observing an unusual number of claims from the pharmacist.

Mr. Reynolds has since repaid $5 million of the defrauded amount to the NHF.
