PM comments on 'bizarre' murder-suicide at HWT police station

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has described Monday's incident, in which 47-year-old Detective Sergeant Kevin Mayne was killed, as bizarre.

Detective Sergeant Mayne, who was attached to the Half Way Tree CIB, was killed while attempting to arrest businessman Dion Singh on the compound of the station.

When another officer came to assist, Mr. Singh reportedly disarmed the assisting officer and shot Detective Sergeant Mayne before shooting himself. Mr. Singh died.

Speaking on Tuesday, Prime Minister Holness offered "deep and sincere condolences to the officer who lost his life" in the "really bizarre" incident.

The incident occurred about 5:45 p.m. on Monday while the businessman was being transported to a cell.

The police say the Independent Commission of Investigations and the Inspector General are probing the matter.
