The People's National Party (PNP) has disclosed that it will conduct a probe into the acquisition of the domain name portiasimpsonmiller.com.
The Party is also weighing its options, after it was discovered that the website redirects users to the official website of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
Julian Robinson, Deputy General Secretary of the PNP, told RJR News that the Party has sought advice regarding the incident, which it has characterised as cyber-squatting.
"We are doing our own investigations about whether they legally bought the domain name or whether they did it through other means," he said.
While conceding that it could have been legally obtained, Mr. Robinson charged that "without a doubt, it is an action which is unethical and immoral, and strikes us as being desperate of a Party seeking traction for a flagging website and a flagging brand."
Cyber-squatting is the registering, selling or usage of a domain name with the intent of profiting from the goodwill of someone else's trademark.
The Party has described the acquisition of the domain name as an act of desperation to gain traction and drive traffic to the JLP's website.
While it is not currently included in Jamaican law, Mr. Robinson, who is also the State Minister for Technology, said there are ways that cyber squatting can be dealt with locally.
"It doesn't necessarily have to be within our local jurisdiction because websites and domain names are not necessarily registered to a specific jurisdiction, so the fact that it is not in a Jamaican law, doesn't preclude action being taken, based on how cyber activities operate internationally," he said.
