PNP reports Daryl Vaz to political ombudsman for 'reckless' and 'irresponsible' comments

PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell

The People's National Party (PNP) has strongly condemned what it describes as reckless and irresponsible statements by Minister Daryl Vaz at a Jamaica Labour Party meeting, following explosions being heard near a JLP meeting in Central Kingston on Sunday night.

PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell says the party has reported Mr. Vaz to the political ombudsman.

He argued that the minister's attempt to prematurely attribute political motives to the incident without any such confirmation from law enforcement is both dangerous and irresponsible.

He warned that the comments by Minister Vaz could heighten political tension.

"Shots were heard, but the police confirmed this was not politically motivated. Yet, Minister Vaz, irresponsibly attributed political motives without evidence. This is dangerous rhetoric. Inflammatory. It risks inciting reprisal and destabilising vulnerable communities. Therefore, we have reported Minister Vaz to the political ombudsman," said Dr. Campbell, who insisted that Mr. Vaz's "conduct breaches standards of peace and fairness" and "undermines our democracy".

The PNP General Secretary called for Mr. Vaz to retract the comments.

"To all leaders, exercise integrity," he urged, adding: "The PNP remains committed to peaceful politics. We will protect Jamaica from fearmongering and division."
