The People's National Party (PNP) is urging the government to stand up for and unequivocally support well-established principles of international relations in light of the actions of the United States in Venezuela.
In a statement on Tuesday, the PNP said the principles, which include a system of rule-based governance of international relations and upholding each nation's right to self-determination and to autonomy, have long guided Jamaica's stance and reputation in international affairs.
The opposition says the use of force to effect regime change or to secure other political or economic interests in the Caribbean threatens the region's peace and security, and risks broader conflict and further descent into a more dangerous and insecure world.
The PNP is reasserting that smaller nations must, of necessity, rely on and stand by the rule of international law to protect their independence, sovereignty and legitimate interests.
Accordingly, it says these nations must join in collective solidarity to preserve their common interests by steadfastly upholding these principles.
It says this moment requires CARICOM to similarly reassert its commitment to these principles and to the restoration of the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.
