The People's National Party (PNP) Women's Movement has said it strongly condemns the unacceptable public remarks made about Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn by attorney Isat Buchanan, chairman of the party's Human Rights Commission.
It said such behaviour against a female leader in the country goes against the principles and values that the party upholds.
The PNP has accepted the resignation of Mr. Buchanan as chairman of the commission following the controversial comments about the DPP he made on a YouTube programme last week.
In a letter to PNP President Mark Golding, Mr. Buchanan said he believes his resignation is in the party's best interest, as the remarks in question do not reflect the values of the organisation.
PNP Women's Movement President Patricia Duncan Sutherland commended the party leader over the swift acceptance of Mr. Buchanan's resignation.
Mrs Duncan Sutherland also commended Mr. Golding on the swift action taken by the leaders of the party, distancing themselves from the offensive comments, adding that it sends a clear message that such inappropriate utterances will not be tolerated within the PNP.
The Jamaica Labour Party Women's Caucus, led by Olivia Grange, had earlier called for the PNP president to act immediately in removing Mr. Buchanan from the role following what it called his 'vile' comments directed toward the DPP.
Ms. Grange said Mr. Buchanan, under the guise of quoting his client, Vybz Kartel, used misogynistic, crude, nasty, sexist, low and disgraceful language in reference to Ms. Llewellyn.
The conversation on the online programme surrounded the controversy brought on by the approach taken by the government to amend the age of retirement of the DPP.
