Police closer to solving missing money mystery

Police investigators probing the alleged disappearance of $17 million from a safe at the Financial Investigation Division (FID) have so far collected statements from 20 employees.

Among the persons interviewed were members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force who are attached to the Division.

An investigator involved in the case told our news centre that by the end of the week there should be a clearer picture on the circumstances which led to the money being removed.

The $17 million was seized from persons who are under investigation for financial crimes.

Last week Finance Minister Audley Shaw said Special Advisor in his Ministry Colonel Trevor McMillan had been asked to improve security at the FID.

He said he was not pleased with the security system at the Division which is grossly understaffed.

Colonel McMillan has been asked to make recommendations on how the department's security systems can be strengthened.

He is expected to submit a report to the Finance Minister before the end of the month.
