Detectives assigned to the Kingston Western Division have charged a police constable who was held with an illegal gun.
Twenty-eight-year-old Shamar White, of the St. Mary Division, has been charged for possession of prohibited weapon and unauthorised possession of ammunition.
Constable White, a resident of Denham Town, West Kingston, was charged following a ruling by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
He was held during a police operation in Denham Town last month.
Investigators say about 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, the police were conducting mobile patrol duties in the area when they observed a Toyota Mark X motor car being driven along Race Course Lane in a dangerous and reckless manner.
The police signalled the driver to stop and he disobeyed and sped off.
A chase ensued, after which the police managed to intercept the vehicle at the intersection of Regent Street and North Street in Denham Town.
The accused and two other men were the occupants.
The men researched and a Smith and Wesson pistol loaded with a magazine containing 12 rounds was removed from the accused man's waistband.
The constable, who identified himself as a member of the JCF, failed to give proper account for the firearm and was arrested.
He is booked to appear before the Gun Court.
