The police last night thwarted an escape by several prisoners at the lock-up at the Hundred Man Station in Portmore, St. Catherine. Nine persons, some of  who are charged with murder, were caught trying to cut their way out their cell.

Superintendent in charge of  operations in the St. Catherine South Police Division, Leon Clunis, says personnel on duty were carrying out routine checks when they discovered the prisoners trying to escape.

A wall in cell block number 3 was disturbed which led to further checks by the lawmen when  a large hole which could accomodate the escape of adults was observed.
Quick action by the police prevented any of the prisoners to escape.
