The St. Thomas police are reporting a reduction in some major crimes across the parish since the start of the year.
However, despite the efforts of the police, there has been an increase in murders and shootings.
There have been 16 reported murders in the parish since the start of the year, an increase of four when compared with the similar period last year.
Cases of shootings also saw a slight increase, with 12 reported shootings, one greater than the 11 reported shootings for the corresponding period last year.
Head of the St. Thomas Police, Superintendent Micheal Smith told RJR News that the police are determined to keep the murder rate lower than the reported 37 in 2011.
He further states that with the improved strategies being used by the police the murder rate should drop to a low of 25.
He says the two areas of main concern are Yallahs and Morant Bay where 10 of the reported 16 murders were committed.
