School administrators and the head of the St. Elizabeth Police Division were locked in a meeting on Friday morning as the probe continues into how a seven-year-old student gained possession of a submachine gun.
The weapon was taken from the child at a school in the parish on Thursday.
The police have not provided any further detail on the issue.
The Child Protection and Family Services Agency has since intervened.
Intervention needed at primary level
At the same time, Children's Advocate Diahann Gordon Harrison is calling for the implementation of additional security and safety measures in primary schools.
While many high schools are already on alert and have measures in place for such incidents, the tender age of the child in this situation highlights the need for interventions to cover all school levels, she argued.
Warning that the situation could have been even more worse had the child discharged the weapon, Mrs. Harrison insisted intervention approaches should be broadened so the country is not "caught off guard" by a more serious event.
