Police seek alternative accommodation for prisoners, police officers

The Police High Command has responded to orders issued by health authorities for the closure of the Kingston Central Police Lock-Up and the Darliston Police Station in Westmoreland.

The orders were issued on Monday by the health authorities of Kingston & St. Andrew and Westmoreland, respectively. They cited unsanitary conditions and public health breaches at the facilities.

Clifford Blake, Deputy Commissioner of Police in Charge of Administration, arrangements were being made to have the prisoners at the Central Kingston lock-up relocated, but he made it clear that this was not an easy operation.

“We have had two meetings with the Department of Correctional services, but as you would understand it will take quite a bit of logistical preparations top relocate 200 prisoners" he stressed.

As for the Darliston Police station, he confirmed that an alternative location was being sought "and as soon as one is found then we will be relocating the police officers and effect repairs to the building."

The Police Federation has expressed concern about conditions at the Darliston Police Station, has been pressing for its relocation.
