The police are seeking to assure residents of Canaan Heights, Clarendon that measures have been put in place to stem the recent flare-up in violence.

The latest incident occurred in late December when six persons were shot, two fatally.

Speaking at a community meeting at the start of the weekend, Deputy Superintendent Owen Brown, head of the Community Safety and Security Branch in Clarendon, expressed confidence that the police will again bring peace to the community.

"We've had 21 per cent reduction in our major crimes. Where murder is concerned, we were almost 40 less than we had last year. In fact, it follows into this year in that up until the 16th of January, this parish never saw one murder. But we cannot afford to sit on our laurels. We understand that the work has just begun," he declared.

Reprisals have been blamed for some of the shootings in the parish.

Intervention activities through the Social Development Corporation and Jamaica Social Investment Fund have been implemented.

In light of the violence, a ban which was imposed on social gatherings in the area remains in place.

DSP Brown appealed to the residents to understand the necessity of  the measure, given that gunmen are not afraid to carry out attacks on large gatherings.
