Police Corporal Alcourt Williams who was convicted of shooting two patrons at a football match at the Drax Hall Sports Complex in St Ann in May 2010, killing one of them, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The sentence was handed down in the St. Ann Circuit Court on Friday afternoon.

Justice Georgiana Frazer sentenced Corporal Williams to 15 years and 10 months for murder and 16 months for the charge of unlawful wounding.

He will have to serve 10 years before being eligible for parole.

Prior to sentencing, he served seven weeks in custody, which the Judge took into consideration.

Prosecutors had reported that the policeman had sought to quell several fights which broke out at the football match when he discharged his weapon, shooting the two patrons - one of whom died.

In handing down the sentence, Justice Georgina Frazer made reference to Corporal Williams's obligation as a police officer to intercept a crime in progress in keeping with the mandate to serve and protect.

She also commented on his excellent social enquiry report and his antecedent citing he was not a threat to the society.

The judge also mentioned that Corporal Williams made no attempt to cover up his role in the incident.

After the sentencing, Williams bowed his head and said "thank you" to the judge before being escorted from the courtroom.

Several police officers from various ranks attended in support of their colleague.

Family members also showed their support.
