UK and France have duty to 'firmly' tackle illegal migration, says Macron

President Emmanuel Macron has told Parliament that the UK and France have a duty to tackle illegal migration "with humanity, solidarity and firmness".

Speaking on the first day of his state visit, the French president said the countries cannot allow their rules for taking in people to be flouted in criminal networks to cynically exploit the hopes of so many individuals.

President Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will hold meetings from Wednesday aimed at tackling small boats across the channel.

Downing Street says it expects good progress during the three-day visit.
