Leading voices in the society are beginning to call for both major political parties to release their manifestos as voters prepare to go to the polls.
Kathryn Silvera, President of the Jamaica Manufacturers & Exporters Association, speaking Monday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said the electorate needs to know how both political parties plan to move the country forward.
While acknowledging that the Jamaica Labour Party has had a decade of performance in government, she said the public needs to see a manifesto from both parties.
She stressed, however, that it was particularly important for the opposition People's National Party "to come out with their mandate or manifesto."
"From the manufacturing sector, we want to see what are their proposals on human capital and skills development; an incentive for trade, export and industrial growth," she explained.
On the same note, Professor Anna Perkins, Co-Chair of the Advocates Network, wants the manifestos to also reflect how much it will cost taxpayers to fund the plans outlined.
She said this would give Jamaicans a clearer sense of what can realistically be achieved in light of these promises, noting that "a lot of these manifestos require funding, and money coming out of the public purse."
She believes therefore that the public needs to know what is being promised ahead of the election so that they can evaluate whether "they can realistically be part of the perforance of the party, once they are in power."
