The contentious rural school bus programme has been given the nod of approval by some members of the electorate despite staunch criticism from the parliamentary opposition.
That's according to the findings of the latest RJRGLEANER Don Anderson poll.
The respondents were asked to choose between the Jamaica Labour Party's rural school bus system and the People's National Party's proposed $10,000 cash vouchers to assist 20,000 students with transportation.
Some 55.1% of respondents were in favour of the government's plan. Meanwhile, 34.2% say they prefer the PNP's proposal to issue cash vouchers.
The remaining 10.7% expressed uncertainty about which plan they are in support of.
The latest survey, which canvassed respondents from 1,008 registered voters aged 18 years and older, was conducted from August 2 to 11 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3%.
The government's proposed rural school bus system is expected to take effect at the start of the September 2025 school term, while the cash vouchers would come into effect if the PNP forms the next government.
The two proposals have been a matter of public discourse, with criticisms from the opposition that the buses imported to support the programme are old and unfit to handle rural Jamaica's narrow and hilly terrain.
