Polls close in 2024 Local Government Election

The polls are now closed for the highly anticipated Local Government Election and officials and supporters of Jamaica's two main political parties are no doubt eagerly awaiting the results.

The Local Government Election, the first since 2016, saw thousands of electors casting ballots across the island at 6,726 polling stations in 2,148 locations.

The 499 candidates and three vying for Mayor of Portmore will know their fate in the coming hours.

Director of Elections Glasspole Brown says some locations will remain open beyond 5 o'clock due to hiccups which delayed voting.

Speaking from the election centre with reporter Javaughn Keyes earlier Monday afternoon, Mr. Brown said there were a few minor incidents in the morning and a fatal shooting in Flanker, St. James which briefly disrupted voting.

Data provided by the EOJ indicated that up to 3:00 this afternoon, the voter turnout was 22.93 per cent.

In 2016, the turnout for the comparative period was 21.62 per cent.
