Linvern Wright, principal of William Knibb Memorial High School

As school administrators scramble to fill teacher vacancies, principal of William Knibb Memorial High School in Trelawny, Linvern Wright says it appears the pool of available teachers in the education system has dried up.
Mr. Wright says he has had moved to alternative arrangements announced by the Education Ministry, including the employment of a retired educator for one of the 14 positions open at his institution.
The principal reiterated that the migration of teachers is largely due to economic factors, adding that the employment of recent graduates from teachers' colleges is also being affected by the same issues.
He revealed that teachers are worried about issues such as rent, citing the resignation of one of his teachers who moved back home with his parents because what he had to pay for rent was a large percentage of his salary.
Mr. Wright suggested that teachers are aspiring to comfortably own a home and a car, hence the reason many are choosing to leave the country.
He was a guest Monday on TVJ's Smile Jamaica.
Mr. Wright's insistence that there is a shortage of teachers follows the Minister of Education's assurance that more teachers are available than positions to be filled.
