Mayor Leon Thomas

Mayor of Portmore, Leon Thomas, has called for Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie to make funds available to municipal corporations to assist with providing care packages to people in need, following Hurricane Beryl.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced in Parliament on Tuesday that $4 million would be made available to Members of Parliament for post Beryl recovery efforts in their constituencies. But Mayor Thomas argues that people have been reaching out to their local representatives.
"I am using this medium to call upon Minister of Local Government to provide funds to assist the councillors within this municipality to help us to reach to those needy persons [who] are out there and asking and crying out for some assistance," the mayor pleaded.
He was speaking Wednesday at a general council meeting of the Portmore Municipal Corporation where he encouraged councillors to share the calls for assistance they have received.
These, he said, will be compiled and used to make a case to the Local Government Minister for support.
