Prime Minister Andrew Holness
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has said he is not aware that Orrette Fisher was forced out as Director of Elections due to political pressure.
Mr. Holness responded to claims in Mr. Fisher's resignation letter during an interview with RJR News on Wednesday.
"I am not saying that what he is saying is untrue, but I have no knowledge or proof," he said.
"I believe, however, that the ECJ (Electoral Commission of Jamaica) is such an important national insititution that even the suggestion should be cause for concern and there is an appropriate mechanism where those issues can be addressed," Mr. Holness continued.
He said because of the "sensitive nature" of the issue, a meeting between himself, the Leader of the Opposition, ECJ chairman and Governor General may be necessary to reaffirm that "there is no compromise of the integrity and impartiality" of the Electoral Commission.
