Prime Minister to make debut Budget Presentation

Several major announcements are expected Tuesday when Prime Minister Bruce Golding makes his contribution to the 2008/2009 Budget Debate.

Expectation is high that Mr. Golding will be going to Gordon House with a bag of goodies for his first Budget Presentation since being sworn in as Prime Minister last September.

With rising food prices a major headache for the Government Mr. Golding is expected to outline a raft of measures to address the situation.

Crime, job creation and new investments for Jamaica are also expected to feature high in the Prime Minister's address.

Additionally, Mr. Golding is likely to respond to a warning issued last week by Opposition Leader Portia Simpson-Miller not to hike NHT mortgage rates.

The Prime Minister will also outline the various policies and plans to be pursued by his administration during the current financial year.

Political Analyst Lloyd B. Smith said the contents of Mr. Golding's address will have far reaching implications for the future of his seven month old Government.

"His speech comes at a time when the country is in the throes of a very serious cost of living crisis with food and gas prices," said Mr. Smith.

"There is also the constitutional crisis of the West Portland seat. What is going to be important is for Mr. Golding to show in what ways the government intends to get the country out of the current economic morass," he continued.

RJR94FM will carry the Prime Minister's budget presentation live starting around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon.

And Social Security Minister Pearnel Charles has hinted that the Prime Minister will announce additional programmes to assist the poor.

He told RJR News that the Prime Minister will also touch on the issue of pension benefits.

"I think the Prime Minister will be looking at several aspects of social development in his presentation. I know that he has been greatly concerned about pensioners and children on the PATH programme. I expect him to have some exciting news for those who are suffering below the poverty line," said Mr. Charles.
