Professor Edward Baugh, one of Jamaica's most prolific writers, poet,  academic, and university orator, died on Saturday night.  
 
Professor Baugh was renowned for his contributions to the development of Caribbean literature as a writer and lecturer and garnered an international reputation as an authority on Anglophone Caribbean poetry.
 
His literary criticism, a hallmark of his work, led to him being recognized as one of the Caribbean's best.
 
Noted broadcaster Fae Ellington, commenting on his passing, characterised Edward Baugh firstly as "a gentleman and a scholar."
 
She recalled first seeing him in a production of Shakespeare's Macbeth.
 
"Just the presence of the man; as a youngster, I was in awe! And then after that, to see him function as the Public Orator at the University of the West Indies, she noted while responding to his passing on Radio Jamaica's That's a Rap.
 
Additionally, she recalled that he was the first Jamaican to be appointed Professor of English at the University of the West Indies... An amazing man!"
 
Professor Baugh served as a Lecturer at several University of the West Indies campuses as well as international universities.
 
He also served on several public bodies in Jamaica, including the Jamaica Library Board and the Access to Information Appeal Tribunal.
