Protest looming at JPSCo

Industrial unrest is looming at the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo).

The National Workers Union (NWU) has called a press conference for Tuesday at 3pm to outline a plan of action which is likely to affect operations at the power company.

The RJR News Centre reported over the weekend that trouble was brewing at JPS due to the prolonged dispute over a job reclassification exercise.

Our news centre received confirmation Monday night that the Oversight Committee which is looking into the matter had called off a meeting which was scheduled for Tuesday.

It was reported that the meeting had been postponed as more time was needed to calculate the payouts to workers.

The Committee is overseeing the implementation of a seven-year-old IDT award regarding a job evaluation exercise as well as a new salary scale for JPSCo workers.

President Emeritus of the NWU Clive Dobson said he had not been informed about the cancellation.

As a result, Mr. Dobson said the NWU along with other unions will be showing up at the JPSCo's Head Office for the meeting and warned that normality could not be guaranteed if the talks were not held.

"The four unions, the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), the NWU, the management's bargaining union and the Union of Clerical, Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE) will be attending the meeting at 2 o'clock and if the meeting is not held I know there could be serious consequences as far as the provision of electricity to the nation," said Mr. Dobson.

As a result of the delay, it appears unlikely that JPSCo workers will receive retroactive payments next month as planned.
