The health authorities in St. James have declared that the rat infestation in Montego Bay has reached crisis level.

As a result, the city has embarked on a five-month rat control programme.

Much of the work will be carried out during “night drives,” Lennox Wallace, Chief Public Health Inspector in St. James, explained on Tuesday.

The areas of focus will include “the clock area of Barnett Street and all streets running off Barnett Streets,” he said.

The two craft markets are particularly badly affected by the rat infestation, he added, declaring that all properties that fall below minimum public health standards will be subject to sanctions, “including closure”.

Wallace promised that there will be constant monitoring of  the areas where the rodent control programme will be carried out to maintain control of the situation afterwards.
