Residents of Southside in Kingston are upset with the police over the early Friday morning shooting of their area leader during a joint police/military operation.
The residents are claiming that 31-year old Horace Ramsay otherwise called "Pugu" and "Brother P" was killed in cold blood.
The police had already cordoned off Stephen Lane where the shooting took place when RJR News arrived in the community Friday morning.
Residents were kept at bay by soldiers and police who warned protesters to stay off the street in the vicinity of the police tape.
However, some refused to listen and told our news team that gunshots rang out in the community sometime after 5 o'clock and shortly afterwards, the message began to circulate that "Pugu" had been killed.
According to the residents, he was killed while he slept with his girlfriend and two of his children.
His teenaged daughter, who was inside the house at the time of the shooting, wept openly and had to be consoled by residents.
As police and soldiers stood watch angry family members joined in a noisy protest by residents, demanding justice.
"No rape nah gwan bout yah, no tief, no war, nutten at all bout yah. How we a go live in peace, how we ago eat, how wi pickeny dem ah go school? Him support the baby dem round here … when wi don’t have nutten him give it to wi. He’s a peacemaker … how wi a go sleep tonight," cried several Southside residents.
Meanwhile, Rosalee Hamiliton, Councillor for the Rae Town Division, while questioning the actions of the police described Mr. Ramsay as a good area leader:
"On more than one occasion the police say he’s a person of interest and he has gone in to them and not been arrested, so I don’t understand how the police reacted the way they did. He is a nice person, somebody you can talk and relate to and you will understand that you have good area leaders and bad areas leaders," she said.
