Rio Cobre fish kill

A fish kill in the Rio Cobre in St Catherine has prompted the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) to warn residents against using the area for domestic purposes.

Natalie Fearon, Manager for Public Education at NEPA said members of the public should also avoid eating fish caught in the river.

The alert was issued after NEPA confirmed Saturday that a substance yet to be unidentified was released into the river late Friday, resulting in the fish kill.

“The water really has shown evidence of some kind of contamination.  We are aware that there was unauthorized release of some substance from WINDALCO…we’ve taken samples of water and fish…so NEPA will be looking into the matter and taking any necessary enforcement action,” Mrs Fearon said.
