Second food price list published

A new list of prices for basic food items has been released by the Commerce Ministry as it continues to put pressure on retailers.

The listing, which was compiled from a survey done by the Consumer Affairs Commission was published in Thursday's edition of this morning daily newspapers.

A list published two weeks gave the prices of 15 basic food items, indicating the best and the worst prices offered in the Corporate area and Manchester.

This time, the listing compares prices in the Corporate area and St. Catherine.

Worst prices were listed in red and best prices in green.

Super Plus Food stores again had some of the worst prices on several items in its corporate area and St. Catherine stores.

The store located at Pines Plaza in Portmore had the worst prices on corned beef, sardine, whole chicken, powdered milk and margarine.

A tin of Lasco corned beef at that store costs $193.70 compared to $162.80 cents at AJ's supermarket in Spanish Town.

Meanwhile, both Super Plus and AJ's were beaten by Jimmy's in Spanish Town on the price of whole chicken.

Jimmy's quotes a price of $251.32 as opposed to $294.50, at Super Plus and AJ's.

In the corporate area, Super Plus also had the highest prices on mackerel, sardines, whole chicken, condensed milk, brown sugar, rice and eggs.

At that store, eggs retailed for $225.95 compared to $175.50 at Lee's Food Fair on the Boulevard.

Shoppers Fair came out on top as the supermarket with the best prices in the corporate area as many of its prices were listed in green.

The situation was the same two weeks ago.

Grace corned beef ranged between a low of $172.60 at New Brooklyn Supermarket in Twin Gates plaza to a high of $187.70 at both Sovereign Supermarket in Liguanea and Shop and Save in Spanish Town.
