Heavy rains overnight have left several roads in St. Ann, St. Mary and Portland impassable.

The National Works Agency (NWA) says flooding was reported along Runaway Bay and Cross Road in St. Ann as well as Seamans Valley road in the Rio Grande Valley, Portland.

In St. Mary, rivers are in spate and have overflowed on to roads in Dressike and Jacks River.

St. Mary damage

Mayor of Port Maria Richard Creary has lamented the millions of dollars in losses for business operators in the town centre after their establishments were flooded during the heavy rains.

Mr. Creary and residents of Port Maria, St. Mary stood in knee-high and, in some areas, waist-high water to survey the damage on Tuesday morning.

The Port Maria Primary and several businesses in the town were flooded.

"[E]very time that happens my heart goes out to those persons who would have lost millions of dollars," the mayor lamented, adding that "the recovery process is going to be a long one".

Mr. Creary said the drainage plan for the town should be fast-tracked.

The mayor told Radio Jamaica News that other areas of the parish including Islington and Oracabessa were also flooded.
