NWA clears blocked roads following heavy rain in several parishes

National Works Agency (NWA) teams have cleared most of the roads which became impassable follow heavy rain in St. Ann, St. Mary and Portland on Monday night.

Flooding was reported in Runaway Bay and Cross Road in St. Ann as well as Seamans Valley road in the Rio Grande Valley, Portland.

In St. Mary, rivers became in spate and overflowed on to roads in Dressike and Jacks River. The parish's capital, Port Maria, was also badly affected by flooding, which Mayor Richard Creary said has resulted in businesses losing millions of dollars.

In an update Tuesday afternoon, NWA Communication Manager Stephen Shaw said the water from these areas had receded but teams are still monitoring the situation as it had begun to rain again.

He said the NWA is assessing the damage in the three affected parishes and "are working to try and ease the situation where some persons have been having difficulties using some roads owing to them being blocked as a result of flooding, fallen trees and the like".
