Three illegal firearms were seized during a major police/military operation at 100 Sunrise Crescent in St. Andrew on Monday.

A high-powered assault rifle was among the weapons seized along with a quantity of assorted ammunition.

Several people were also taken into custody in the operation, conducted by the St. Andrew North Police, Caribbean Search Centre, Canine Division,
Specialised Operations and members of the Jamaica Defence Force.

Senior Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Corporate Communications Unit, said the operation was in response to recent robberies and shootings in the general Sunrise, Hundred Lane and Chancery Street area.

"So far, they (security forces) have taken a number of persons in custody, some of whom are already persons of interest in previous crimes committed in the space, as well as some persons who are likely to be suspects."

She said at least one of those taken into custody will be charged with illegal possession of firearm and other offences under the Firearms Act after he was held with one of the weapons seized.

SSP Lindsay added that the police will continue their focus on the community, targeting violence producers.
