Senate approves amendments to Companies Act

The Senate on Thursday approved amendments to the Companies Act.

With the changes, registering a new business entity can be done at one location, with a single business registration form.

This is one of the growth-enhancing structural reforms under Jamaica's Extended Fund Facility agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Lambert Brown, Government Senator said the amendments to the Act have come at the right time:

“These legislations, though they come before us one at a time, are part of a grand design; and we are to put all of them together to show that we seeking to get the levels of investment in our economy that will bring the growth and development we seek.”

Ruel Reid, Opposition Senator, said every effort must be made to ensure that the objectives of the legislation are met:

“I am joining my colleagues in supporting this Bill, but supporting in the context that there is more work to be done and when we pass these legislations it is to the end of accelerating growth that will ensure that all of us as Jamaicans will live in a country of prosperity, peace and harmony.”
